Mesa Verde Colorado, 1963.

Family vacations were a way of life for us in the 60's. Wonderfully miserable affairs with our five family members crammed into a Chevy station wagon, with no air conditioning. In 1963 driving hell bent for Seattle and the Worlds Fair, we stopped only for important historical or cultural attractions. Mesa Verde was one such stop. And I'm glad it was. It seemed to me to be a mystical place and in my 13 year old mind, I could see the "ancient ones" climbing the ladders to the creek below or to the mesa top to tend to their fields. It must have been a beautiful place even then. |
